How long do residential gas lines typically last?

Most steel pipes last around fifty years under perfect conditions. Wet soil or frequent freezing weather drastically cuts that lifespan down to thirty years or less.

Can a small gas leak fix itself over time?

Absolutely not. Leaking pipes only grow larger as pressurized gas forces its way through the decaying metal. You must always repair or replace compromised sections immediately.

Who is responsible for replacing the gas line to the street?

The local utility company handles everything up to the main meter. You own all the plumbing running from that meter into your house and backyard appliances.

Does homeowners insurance cover gas line replacement?

Standard policies rarely cover routine wear and tear on plumbing. They might pay for sudden damage from a fallen tree but almost never cover age related rot.

Is it safe to stay in the house if I smell gas?

Get out immediately and leave the front door wide open. Do not flip any light switches or use your cell phone inside. Call emergency services outside.
